What if Charles XII signed a treaty with Peter the great giving Peter St Petersburg and the surrounding areas only and the swedes retaining Livonia etc and joined one of the sides of the spanish succession wars?

That would require him to have a totally different personality. That is what doomed Sweden IOTL, after all, that Charles took everything so personal. he was winning against Saxony-Poland, but no, he had to punish Saxony and put a favourite of his on the Polish throne, without Sweden gaining anything, thus allowing Russia to conquer the Baltic provinces. And then he had to go on some mad chase that saw him ending up in Ottoman Exile. Really, with such a different Charles XII, even the initial stages of the war will be different.

OK, let finish him off. Stray bullet would do great. 1st Narva (1700), Poltava (1709) or some lucky Polish szlachcic or Saxonian sharpshooter in between. Make your pick.
