Great Danish Empire?

This is my first time writing something on the forum. So, what I was thinking was at some point in the 13th and 14th centuries, Danish relations with the Hanseatic League improves. Eventually, Denmark, leading the Kalmar Union, joins the Hanseatic League. With the Kalmar Union with it, the Hanseatic League manages to save the Republic of Novgorod. However, Denmark's massive contribution to the war effort leads to Denmark having effective control over the Republic of Novgorod. This eventually leads to a Great Danish Empire.
-Lets assume that with Hanseatic League at its side Denmark consolidates Kalmar Union, at least for now. :D
So my questions.
-How would Denmark fix relations with Hanseatic League?
-What would be the POD?
-Would it even be possible for the Hanseatic League to save Novgorod from Muscovy with the help of the Kalmar Union? If so, would Denmark be able to control the republic?

Kalmar Union wasn't that much of a political than personal union. It meant that each constituent of it kept its identity, its interests and their divergences. Swedes, especially, weren't enthusiasts about it.

Hanseatic League wasn't an unified body as well, but a collection of independent city-states quite wary of their interests as well.
It should be noted that Scandinavian and Hanseatic interests were quite contradictory. Kalmar Union managed to be a thing in fear of German expansionism.

Danemark ending as a semi-protectorate of Hansa is doable (after all, the succession was submitted to Hanseatic approval), the reverse is less likely, and Kalmar Union would be the total opposite of this objective.

As for Novgorod Republic...Even with Danish support, I don't see how it would be possible to "save" it without having a PoD screwing Moscovy and Tver right from the XIVth century.
You may have better chances making Moscovy or Tver-Vladimir more accepting of Hansa (maybe an Hanseatic support against Novgorod? It would look weird, but let's imagine that that troubles or hostile takeover of the republic let this possibility open.

The elimination (or prevention) of the Sound Due would probably be a good start. I don't see the Danish monarch ever giving up on such a lucrative source of income just to please the Hansa though.

Wasn't even that much of a personal union. For lengthy periods of time, Sweden, Denmark and Norway actually had different kings, leading to uprisings, rebellions and civil war. The Kalmar Union can justly be said to only ever have existed on paper, and at the time, very few paper even paid much respect to that paper. Ironically, modern constitutional scholars have actually questioned whether the famous Letter of Union from 1397 was actually legally binding in the first place! It can actually have been unconstitutional, and it can in fact be that the Kalmar Union never was more than a mere superstition.
