Mike Gravel was the United States Senator from Alaska from 1969-1981. In 1980 he was defeated in his primary narrowly by the grandson of the man he beat in 1968.
He also ran for President in 2008 on a platform that more or less amounted to direct democracy, being very anti-war, and hating the IRS. After the Democratic Primary he proceeded to come third for the Libertarian nomination.
In the 1970s he also read all 4000 pages of the Pentagon Papers on the Senate Floor before the courts ruled that it was okay for newspapers to publish them.
So, what if Gravel had tried for President in 1980 as a Libertarian after losing the nomination for Senate?
