The defining question of the last decade of Grand Forks politics has been - should Grand Forks join Vesperia, or should it remain within the United States system, whether as an associated state or incorporated into the Constitution? Before 2023, however, this question was hardly reflected within the election returns; members of the State Assembly were elected or not chiefly due to local factors like religion, ethnicity, and unionization.

The turning point came in December 2021, when Speaker Jeffrey Parker (Gov't-Grand Forks Manchester) sent the first official delegation to Montréal to discuss the legal process of joining confederation. This was followed by Resolution 22A, in which the Assembly resolved to appoint a commission to begin the process of officially joining Vesperia; soon after, the date was officially set for January 1, 2025.

This forced a response from the opposition. Christian Values, the political wing of the Apostolic movement, opposed unification because it would require Grand Forks to repeal laws declaring Christianity the state faith, as well as end capital punishment and criminal penalties for sodomy; the Cooperatives and Socialist Workers opposed the fact that unification would likely undermine the state system of price controls and subsidies on wheat and fuel, as well as state ownership of banking, rail, and the post; and People Power opposed the likely end of Sioux legal autonomy and border rights. All four parties, as well as several independents who opposed the government for other reasons, came out against unification, or at least against the ongoing unification process.

The 2023 election returned a one-seat minority for the government. But while Parker announced his resignation, his successor Lyell Robertson (Gov't-Avalon) is likely to be able to negotiate a compromise, likely including a referendum on confederation and a postponement of the official date to 2026 or 2027. For one thing, the Government made substantial gains, especially in the rural north, complicating the narrative that Grand Forkers rejected the notion of confederation wholesale; for another, many urban opposition MPs, particularly in the Socialist Workers - Popular Front Party, could likely be convinced that a liberalized criminal code and more protections for cultural minorities are worth a slightly less generous welfare state, especially if the exceptions to trade union restrictions negotiated for oilfield workers can be extended to more categories of worker...

This is absolutely brilliant! You perfectly captured the formatting and writing styles of both publications. If I didn't pay close attention to the content, I would think the second image was a real NYT frontpage. I also like the subtle differences in format to alt-CNN.

I also love how Netscape Navigator is still around in 2021.

Don't know if this belongs in graphics or maps so just to be sure I will put in both. There a few minor divergences from OTL :

  • The Attempted Coup of 1964 was discovered shortly before JFK assassination. It's a failed coup like many other attempted coups in Latin America
  • Latin America stayed more stable during the Cold War and is also much more anti-American
  • As consequence, neither Lula or Bolsonaro see the Presidency. One stays a drunken syndicalist and the other a disgruntled army capitalist captain
  • The rest of the world goes as OTL until 2001, first with the 9/11 attack taking out most of the US government. In 2008 with the election of John McCain running against Hillary Clinton. The Republicans leave the White House in 2016. Who could be the Democrat winner in 2016 ? Honestly I don't know but I know the Republicans can't hold for over 4 mandates even with a more politically and numerically deadly 9/11
  • In 2020 with the excuse of the terrorists in the Tri-Border Area (TBA) of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, Brazil together with Paraguay and Argentina is invaded due to these nations refusal to handover potential suspects and sixty years of anti-Americanism
What happens is the division of Brazil. I was inspired by a few historical entities : Congo Free State(see Amazon and Acre), Vichy France with Petain (see State of Brazil and Doria) and Baltic Resistance against the Nazis and the Soviet Union plus the Rwandan Patriotic Front ( the Revolutionary Patriotic Front ), this former is a rag tag mish mash of National Bolsheviks, Integralists, Communists, Monarchists and others who want the gringo out of their country.

Ok, so I have been wondering how the modern police would look like in a surviving Kaiserreich. So the cars would be in fir green/gray blue/olive green and white depending in which state you are and have the some font like the DS Wallau with the smaller coat of arms of said kingdom, grand duchy, duchy, principality and free state. For example here we would have the Police in the Duchy of Brunswick (where I would live).

So this is what would be on the sides of the police car.
The word police would be on the front doors while the CoAs would be on the back doors.

I'd imagine it would be a bit more complex for the Kingdom of Prussia.
With either just the CoA of Prussia, the CoA of the province or both CoAs being on the car.
