Grand List of New World Colonies

Inspired by real-world minor colonial efforts in the Americas, here is one of those AH board game thingies where you think up ahistorical colonies established by European (and Asian, maybe even African or other) powers in a whole different Age of Colonization. I think this has been done before, but I wanted to emphasize on the minor colonies belonging to unlikely powers.

There is no preset POD or timeline, though if people want to add on to each others' ideas without directing contradicting them, it would be cool with me. I'm sure not going to make a map or anything like that.

I'll start off.

San Valletta [OTL St. Bart's] - The sole New World possession of the Knights Hospitaller, acquired in 1567 after it was bequeathed by the Holy Roman Emperor in honor of the Order's successful defense against the Ottoman siege of Malta. Initially called New Petronium, the name was later changed to reflect the canonization of the former Grand Master of the Order. Though never heavily developed, the island became the Knights' toehold in the Noddian Isles [Caribbean], and where the Order's activities in the New World were focused at, allowing them to play the role of perennial kingmaker with regards to several disputed territories in the region and to engage in several evangelization efforts on the mainland.

Though the island of Clermont [OTL St. Croix] was later given to the Knights by Duke Henry of Auvergne in 1604, it was captured by the Mali colonial city-state of Kangaba [OTL Curaçao] amidst the Noddian Crusades and eventually granted to the Catholic Kingdom of Kongo at the Council of Ehingerburg.

Viceroyalty of Little Venice

The lands of Little Venice are split into two areas:

Terra Mississipia [OTL Louisiana, parts of Mississippi, West Florida, East Florida]

The land is populated and built by Venitians, discovered in 1500 by Christopher Colombus, weho defected from Spain to Venice, bringing with him the knowledge of the Americas. Venice colonized this place first, establishing many cities, like Nova Verona [Baton Rouge], San Marcos [Mobile], San Augustina [St. Augustine], Nova Padua [Orlando], and the captial, Nova Venezia [New Orleans].

Major exports are sugar, wheat, corn, beef, turkey, etc.

Terra Maya [OTL Yucatan, Chiapas, Oaxaca]

Conquered during the 16-17 century, when the Spanish could not, the land was mainly a place to trade with the Mayans. Eventually, the interior lands were absordbed and the Mayans and Venitians mixed together, forming a Mexico-like situation. Many other Italians fled to Terra Maya to escape the poverty in Italy following the fall of Rome to the Hapburgs, and later, the fall of Naples, and the Last Stand at Palermo. Many Aztecs fled here after the Spanish attacked Tenochititlan (but not conquer). The capital is Chiapia [Merida].

Nova Roma [OTL Dominica]- Founded by the Papal States through Pope Calixtus IV in 1525 with the bull Novus Universitas Pacis, both in response to the Tordesillas Wars and the ongoing Reformation. Decreeing that a lasting peace must be struck between the clashing colonial powers of Oceania [the Americas] so that the Catholic nations can focus on resolving heresy in Europa, the Vatican sent a mission led by Pompeo Cardinal Colonna to seize the island from its wayward Milanese overlords in the name of all Christendom. Nova Roma was declared a papal fief, its Arawak inhabitants converted to ready-born servants of the Church, and though everlasting peace never came to Oceania (nor even the Noddian) the island proved to be the center of Roman Catholic efforts in the New World.

Nagashima (long island): established by Japanese merchants in the 17th century in what today is Yerba Buena (San Francisco), it thrived from 1645 to 1687, before being discovered by the Spanish authorities of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

By 1711 the colony of Nagashima, with a population of 5,000 Japanese and 8,000 Japanese-Native mestizos, was captured by Spanish forces and incorporated into the Province of California.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Trivandrum: named after the Keralan city of Trivandrum, this Travancore colony in what is today the Brazilian province of Mina Gerais was founded by Travancori merchants in 1677 and between 1679 and 1724 it existed as the only Indian colony in the American continent in history

-----------------------------------------------------------

Viceroyalty of NeuKonigsberg: given by the British to the King of Prussia after the Seven Years wars, it was settled by over 1,200 war veterans of Prussian and German origin between 1764 and 1776, and then by a second wave of 2,000 men after the Napoleonic wars.

It was occupied by the United States in 1917, becoming an independent Republic in 1960

Hvit Oy (White Island): Norwegian fishing and whaling colony established on the south/east of OTL Newfoundland. Originally settled for over-wintering vessles exploiting the Grand Banks, but expanded greatly in the 1820's by Lutherans fleeing Orthdox persecution following the conquest of Scandanvia by Emperor Alexander I of Russia* Bishop Olan founded The Exiled Lutheran Church of Norway in Sjomann Oppdater in 1821, providing a refuge for the faithful that managed to escape the terrors of the pogroms of the Muscovite religious enforcers.

* during the turmoil of Imperial France's collapse in 1819 after the death of Napoleon while convalescing from gout in Bordeaux.

Seo-Goryeo{ West Korea ][OTL Southern California}

Discovered in 1208 when Korean fisherman accidentally were blown over here. Goryeo relocated its seat of government here during the Mongol invaison and millions of refugees followed. With superior weaponary and disease Goryeo managed to conquer much of the Americas and with fierce Mayan mercenearies managed to conquer Japan and Manchuria. Eventually Seo-Goryeo's population vastly outnumbured the homeland's population and industry. Now Goryeo is one of the world's superpowers along with the Greater Caliphate and the Anglo-Danish empire.

Neu Brandenburg (Delmarva Peninsula) After the inheritance of Pomerania in 1612, Brandenburg set out to establish a small colony in the new world, for prestige value as much as economic potential. However, the English, French, Spanish and Aquitanians had gobbled the majority of the valuable Caribbean islands, so the Elector had to look further north. The Brandenburg colonists came across a peninsula that was originally mapped out by a Dutch explorer 5 years ago. They decided to land there and proclaim the new colony of Neu Brandenburg, with its capital based at Potsdam (Harrington). Brandenburg itself was preoccupied in Germany with the Silesian Wars, so Neu Brandenburg had to rely on its own resources to survive for a period of time. Colonists trickled to start with, but enough came for the colony to establish hegemony over the whole peninsula. Small expeditions of expansion took place between 1630 and 1655, adding a whole new province under its rule by 1649, Neumark (New Jersey).

The real turning point for the young colony was the establishment of the North German Kingdom in 1660, under Brandenburger leadership, stretching from East Frisia in the west to Memel in the east. With its position in northern Germany secured, Brandenburg was capable of creating several key reforms to the colony, including the creation of the Royal German Navy and the establishment of several Trading Companies, of which only the East India and Neu Brandenburg Companies managed to achieve any notable success. This allowed for a great expansion in territory to make room for the hundreds of colonists that were arriving every year. Neu Berlin (Philadelphia) was founded in 1696 and the seat of colonial government moved there in 1700. The colony of Conrad, that brought Neu Brandenburg to the shore of the Great Lakes, was established in 1701. By 1725 the colony was large enough to directly compete with its closest neighbours, French Abaisser le Kenada in the north and the English colony of Jacobia to the south. In 1720 the city of Augusthaven was founded on Manhattan Island, which in a matter of years developed into the commercial heart of the area.

Eventually North Germany gave the colony a degree of autonomy, creating the Empire of Neu-Brandenburg in 1737. The Empire only expanded twice after its inception, once after the Dutch Republic was annexed into Germany in 1748, with its colonies in the Bahamas and Ohio going to the Empire, and the second time was after the 6 Years war, in which the French ceded the Cavelier Peninsula (Southern Ontario) to the Empire. However it soon became the leading nation in the New World in terms of infrastructure and commerce. It regularly sent forces to defend their motherland in times of war and many historians argue that without Neu Brandenburger assistance North Germany would likely not have been able to unify Germany after the Bavarian War of Succession. To this day Neu Brandenburg is a leading state in terms of science and economics.

Someone should do a map here...I see a whole new world...

Next time I'll stipulate that all of these entries have to be consistent and work out geographically and historically. But none of those games work because people are always too lazy to read the other threads and keep a consistent in-universe viewpoint.

New Cordova: Established by Al-Andalus in the region of Florida, when Ishaq ibn Yussef landed on the Island of New Granada (OTL Cuba). A window of racial and religious tolerance, it had the distinction among colonies established in the early period of allowing the existence of natives under the auspices of the Council of Cordova, which justified the treatment of natives as full equals under the principle that Allah created mankind to be one brethren and that the natives of New Cordova would have had their own messenger in a long-forgotten time. In deep rivalry with the rival colony of St. Helena (Dominica) established by the French as a beacon of Christendom in the heavily Islamicized Caribbean.

Huaxyácac - The Mexica-dominated city-state founded by revolting slave populations in West Africa. The Mali, dominant in the Atlantic slave trade, brought Mexica slaves from the Spanish New World possessions in exchange for black slaves, there to grow Maize, a skill that they knew well from their native lands and which was well-suited to the soil of west Africa, until the Mexica formed a substantial proportion of the agrarian population in the Empire. Although many of the Mexica brought over at least nominally converted to Islam, their core cultural identity remained, and subsequent policies by the Sultan Selim the Mad aimed at breaking up the slave society and ending old pagan agrarian rituals and practices, not only among the Mexica but among the tribes subservient to the dominant Mangingka, caused the slave revolt which, having captured a number of important fortresses, lasted for 8 years until the new Sultan finally put it down. Recognizing the importance that the Mexica population played in the Empire's economic life, cultural concessions were granted the Mexica as well as their allied tribes and the community survives to the present day.

Vespuccia (OTL Hispaniola), the very first well established colony in the Caribbean, founded by Amerigo Vespucci under the Italian Republic banner.

Toscana Meridionale (OTL north-east of Brazil), a heavily disputed zone with Venice, Portugal and Netherlands, due to its strategic localization to further travels to India. The city of Splendente(OTL Recife) was the colonial center of the SOII (Societá Occidentali dellas Indias Italianas), the Italian Western Indies Company.
