Graeco-Italian Maritime Republic?

I admit I'm not sure how possible it is. Probably can get a maritime republic, but I think it's destined to be eclipsed by the northerners. Their climate is far better and resource wise, all the south has until the industrial revolution is farming and that was at the mercy of the climate. Unless it's backed by a strong power I don't see it lasting in the long run against the big boys in the north.

There was a substantial Greek presence in southern Italy until recent times so why not have a successful Ottoman Italy POD circa 1480 and have them be the protectors of a Hellenophone maritime city state

The Genoan and Venitian traders were already too dominant to be threatened by an emerging trader like what was proposed by the OP. I think the nature of trade during this time was more monopolistic than would allow for a competitor from the south of italy.

Not to mention by 1480 the meditteranean trade was declining rapidly due to the Portuguese and Spanish discoveries.
