Gracchus Babeuf, French Dictator

Your challenge is to get Gracchus Babeuf, who had ideas vary similar to Communism and was considered to be a precursor to Karl Marx, to successfully take control of France during the French Revolution and to describe what his regime would be like and what impact would it have on modern Communism and Capitalism. My guess is that his best opportunity would be during the Directory but he would need some strong political support.

Let's assume the Conjuration des Egaux is sucessful. The parisian population would be certainly supportive : Babouvistes did a great job at agitation and propagana (at the neutral meaning of the word).

Now, the provincial population and most of land-owners would be really pissed of by that. And this time, the parisian bourgeoisie would likely ally with them, as there's no need of radical revolutionnaries like Robespierre or Marat for them.

It would likely form a Commune-equivalent in Paris, with a siege and a babouvist program partially applied but relativly complete. Finally, it would be founding of a communist-equivalent movment as both reference to "proletariat" (called fourth estate) and the focus on organisation in a disciplined group is present.

Not what I had in mind but it does give me a few ideas.

After he takes over Paris (effectively destroying the government or causing political chaos) some big shot Napoleon type general comes in, smacks him around a bit, then takes over the country.

I personally don't feel that this Commune-equivalent would catch on but I'm open to the thought.
