Felix Leitner: A Life
Expressing the sheer brilliance of Felix Leitner[1] is difficult - the man was such a genius, so ahead of his time, that there is only one man he can truly be compared to - Leonardo da Vinci. His invention of the landcruiser and the repeater rifle changed the face of warfare forever. So this account must therefore deal with his life in broad strokes before getting on with the details. He was born in the city of Innsbruck to an upper middle-class family (his father owned a small arms company) and christened Felix Sebastian Leitner in 1881. Of his early life there is a paucity of records, but he is recorded to have gone to the University of Vienna, and lived a generally comfortable bourgeois existence before his father died in 1906 and he, seemingly reluctantly, took over the family business...
Vienna, March 28 2007
Prince Ludwig tapped his watch irritatedly. He was dressed in his colonel's uniform, complete with ceremonial sabre, waiting for his fiancee to arrive. His father, the Emperor, had reluctantly blessed their upcoming wedding, and so he had invited her to a waltz as a sort of birthday gift.
Ah! There she was, and precisely on the hour too. She was dressed in white, walking imperiously across the floor. Her blonde hair flowed down from her head, cut in a coiffure. Her brown eyes seemed to sparkle, and Ludwig was instantly reminded how much he loved her.
'Care to dance?' she asked in that lovely New York voice. Damn the people who called her *only* an actress, she was perfect to him.
'Yes,' he said. 'Stefani.' [2]

...Designing the new machine-gun has been heavily on my mind the past few days. The generals want something lighter, something easier to carry, to repair and use. I just can't seem to follow their instructions. Hmm, hmm. Perhaps...to make it a rifle? A machine rifle? It seems I surprise myself sometimes.
[Three pages of frenzied sketching follow]
This is my design. It should be simple enough to make and maintain - rugged and hard to ruin. The thing is - will they accept the design? And what shall I call it? Simplicity is key. Storm rifle? No, too florid. Ah - repeater rifle. That will do very well, I believe...
