Gore Cabinet 2001

I need to know who the MOST LIKELY people would be to fill cabinet positions in a Gore White House in 2001.

Please, no political commentary or jokes, and please no wish fulfilment or long shots.

I need to know the MOST LIKELY people.

If you can show references as to why they would be most likely, that would be helpful.

Okay, the two/three I think are possibles thus far are:

Chief of Staff: William Daley
Secretary of State: Richard Holbrooke
Secretary of Defense: Sam Nunn

I've now had the following also suggested:

Interior = Tom Daschle

Need more cabinet members.

I googled "Gore Cabinet" and here's one guy's take on it:

Secretary of State Bill Richardson
Secretary of the Treasury Alice Rivlin
Secretary of Defense Wesley Clark
Attorney General John Edwards
Secretary of the Interior David Freudenthal
Secretary of Agriculture Brian Schweitzer
Secretary of Commerce Mark Warner
Secretary of Labor Robert Reich
Secretary of HHS Thomas Vilsack
Secretary of HUD Eleanor Holmes Norton
Secretary of Trans ?
Secretary of Energy Shelley Berkley (or Tom Davis)
Secretary of Education Dr. Johnetta Cole
Secretary of VA Max Cleland
Secretary of Homeland Sec Susan Collins

EDIT: Found an updated list.

This looks like a cabinet for 2004-5, not 2000-1.

Surely with the Senate being the way it was Gore would have been reluctant to appoint Democrat Senators (I know it also depends on who would be the governors in their states but(

Good point. It would only be outgoing Senators or Senators from states with Democratic Governors.

Need more help, so I'm going to move this to the discussion thread and see if I can recruit some more information.

So, anyone have some more information on who would be the likeliest (and only the likeliest please) members of the first Gore cabinet in 2001?

How about Norman Mineta as Secretary of Transportation?

Gore made a campaign promise in the 2000 Campaign in which he would make Colin Powell SecState.

Is Norman some Transportation guru that both Bush and Gore would have selected him?

REALLY? Do you have any references on that?

I think this question is still relevant for anyone considering a 2000 Election POD.

Powell is a logical choice just because he's good at what he does and is still a famous hero.

Makes 2005 interesting. McCain and Jeb would duke it out for the GOP nomination probably.

If I recall correctly, it was addressed in one of the debates that year.

Hmmm....it would be an awfully high profile position to put a Republican in, as would Defense (at the time). Still, will think about it.

I suppose you mean 2004. Well, yes, it would. Part of the answer to that depends if 9/11 happens or not. I've heard some people postulate that a Gore administration would have acted more on the threat and thus uncovered the plot and stopped it before it was launched. Personally, while it is possible that the Gore administration may have taken it more seriously, I am not certain that there is enough time to expect them to defeat the plot without significant butterflies or a second POD, so I would assume 9/11 happens. I think that would make McCain the much more attractive Republican candidate. I also think that McCain could win against Gore unless he had a major success like capturing or killing Bin Laden and seriously dismantling Al Queda....which is possible, I think.

Still, we are getting ahead of ourselves. I just want to get an idea of who would be making the decisions in the Gore's first four years.

Don't forget Giuliani. He would probably be a major contender for the republican nomination if 9/11 does occur.

True. But given how well he ran in 2008, I think it less likely he gets the nomination.

Some digging found a few nuggets, though all were obviously quite speculative:

State: The most mentioned names were Richard Holbrooke and George Mitchell. Powell was mentioned as a wild card possibility, but remember that Clinton too offered Powell the position; he turned it down due to his party affiliation.

Defense: Sam Nunn and Richard Danzig were leading contenders.

Treasury: The CW was that Larry Summers would continue in the position.

AG: Jamie Gorelick was seen as a likely pick.

Alexis Herman (Clinton's Labor Secretary) was seen as a likely cabinet addition. Charlie Stenholm was floated for Ag Secretary. Norman Mineta was expected to remain at Commerce, Transportation or HUD. Donna Brazille was also thought likely to get a position.
