Gordon relieved at Khartoum 1884/85

Yet another thread inspired by a book I read- WI Gordon had been relieved at Khartoum, if Wolseley's flying columns reached the city earlier ? How much more of a heroic figure and statesman would a living Chinese Gordon have been in Victorian England and on a wider basis ?

That flying relief column would have gotten massacred. But if the British had come in from the Red Sea the whole army could have reached Khartoum in time and saved Gordon.

He might become a huge hero, but he did disobey his orders, and I don't think he had the temperament to be a statesman. I think maybe he was better off (reputation-wise) ending as he did - he was really weird and off-putting.
