Since I'm new here, I don't know if Gorbachev has been talked to death but I have to ask this question.

What if Gorbachev had been killed in a car or plane accident in July 1985. Who would've succeeded him? A hardliner?

Well, Ligachev would be an obvious candidate. My guess is that the next leader of the USSR would be closer to Gorbachev's age than Chernenko's as the Soviet's seem to have had enough of hospital leadership.
