Good Sources on Lower Canada Rebellion and pre-rebellion Quebec?

Hey everybody,

So I've been interested in 1800s Quebec for a while, ever since I learned that I have a French-Canadian ancestor who was relatively famous in the Lower Canada Rebellion (Pierre-Theophile Decoigne, to be precise)

Problem is, I don't know where to look to find good English-language sources on pre-rebellion Quebec (1600s, 1700s, and 1800s) or on the rebellion itself. I'd like to know more about all of it, especially what life was like back then in that particular area.

One problem is that I don't have too many disposable funds, so an expensive book about Quebec would not be a good idea, and I'd prefer free sources on the Internet. Though again, I don't know where to start besides Wikipedia.

A Short History of Quebec

A Short History of Quebec by Dickinson and Young is an excellent survey-level text, and not very expensive; it can also point you towards multiple other works that focus on the era from varying perspectives - of which there are many ranging from Quebec nationalist to British Empire apologist and back again - as is to be expected.

In addition, the Bibliotheque Nationale and the DCB are available on-line and the DCB entries link back and forth.

Best,

Rise to Greatness: The History of Canada From the Vikings to the Present by Conrad Black has a few good bits.

Rebellion: The Rising of French Canada 1837 by Joseph Schull

Lower Canada: 1791-1840 Social Change and Nationalism by Ferdinand Ouellet

Ouellet is probably the best source I have on the topic.
