Good Political Simulation Games?

Pretty much in the title, but after playing the election game mentioned in a thread on this sub-forum, developed a taste for political games I wouldn't mind trying out. Anyone have any recommendations, whether free or pay to play sorts? Any really good ones? The simpler, the better as Civilisation series is about as complex as I prefer.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Tropico. You play El Presidente of a tiny Latin American island nation in the Caribbean, and you have just come to power in the midst of the Cold War. Now, you have to run your island, balance the varying political pressures, and shape everything toward what you want to do with your country.

You can either establish a free, open democracy by reliably standing for reelection, or you can hold to power by engaging in electoral fraud, or you could just do away with democracy altogether and run a military junta. You can pursue a capitalist or communist course of economic development, in turn influencing your foreign policy with the USA and the USSR. You can be secular in your government, or introduce religion in a more direct manner.

The game has a good premise, and on top of that, has a great tongue-in-cheek sense of humor about its subject matter. I recommend it.

Tropico is great. I also recomend president forever however perosnally I prefer the 2008 version to the newer ones. It is a realistic spreadsheet-like simulation.

Democracy 3 was... interesting. It's a fun little political simulator for a few hours, but the model they used is a bit odd and doesn't really reflect reality as well as I would like.

By the end of my British game, UKIP and massive race riots had run minorities out of the nation, balanced out by the continually need to import cheap foreign immigrant labor to keep the nation running, the Conservative Party was using youth paramilitaries and street gangs to intimidate the opposition, British Peers regained the right to fortify and reestablish their ancestral countryside manors in defense against civil and racial disorder, the Conservative/UKIP coalition fought a civil war with the liberals and socialists, and things ended with what I could only assume was the restoration of the Magna Carta. The original feudal Magna Carta.

Still proved to be one of the most popular governments in British history. So that was fun for a few days if not entirely... rational.

Tropico is something I've played in the past, albeit only the first one. Did have a fair bit of fun with it although I recall that the best part of the game was the soundtrack. Not a knock on the series itself, it was just a really good soundtrack.

The Democracy series has no real interest for me though. I owned the first one and it was utterly terrible, devoid of features and charm. I've played internet games that had more effort put into them.

Still makes more sense than Diplomacy when you play against the computer.

I suppose if you want to consider Diplomacy a political game. Personally it was always a game of backstabbing and ruined friendships to me. :p

Try Hidden Agenda, it is an oldy, but a goody.

this, it's available free at abandonia i believe. if you can get doxbox to work it'll give you a good couple hours of play.

also, while it's not strictly a political simulator, i've found that one of the most interesting parts of the victoria series is playing a country with elections and then strictly roleplaying the policies of the parties that get elected.
