Good POD's for Afghanistan?

What might be some good divergence points for the nation/region of Afghanistan? Not anything in particular in mind, just ones that might make things more interesting for the nation and its immediate neighbors.

Preventing the 73 Coup d'etat that ended the monarchy and began the chain of events that led to the start of the ongoing 37 year old war is probably the big on.

President Mohammed Daud is able to prevent (or crush) the 1978 coup that overthrew (and killed) him and brought the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (i.e., the Communists) to power. (This coup was far more momentous in its consequences than Daud's own 1973 coup, which abolished the monarchy but did not attempt any major changes in Afghan society, and which kept Afghanistan a non-aligned, though somewhat Soviet-leaning country, with a gradual tilt away from the USSR in Daud's last years.) A big error of Daud's was that though the government cracked down on a number of PDPA leaders, " Hafizullah Amin with a number of Afghan military officers supporting the Khalq faction of the PDPA wing stayed out of prison. This gave a chance to the group to organize an uprising. " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People's_Democratic_Party_of_Afghanistan
