Good Howard the Duck Movie

I think we all can agree that Howard the duck is one of the worst George Lucas movies, right?

Well, here a question: How could Howard the duck be a decent movie, to the point that most George Lucas fans would have a love hate (and not a just hate) relationship with that movie?

You know nothing, Jon Snow!

Maybe take less influence from the comic. Because most of Howard's mythology is ridiculous, and sounds ridiculous. Perhaps go with Gerber's original idea of having Howard come from a world of anthropomorphic animals, and maybe try to play the parody aspect more.

Hmmmmmm, get the rights to the movie Waxwork.

Add Beverly Switzler (Lea Thompson), of the band Cherry Bomb, as one of the friends who are invited the Wax Museum

Opening shot of Howard is him reading a copy of the World Wide News which reads "Talking Ducks First Sign of Apocalypse!" He is disgruntled and smoking a cigar

A voice over explains how he fell to Earth. Voice overs should be used a lot.

The Sinister David Lincoln lures Howard to his Waxwork with the promise of a hefty paycheck

Howard & Bev defeat the Evil Mr. Lincoln

Of course its set in Cleveland

Had they stick on concept of social satires, with parodies of genre fiction, with Howard braking the four Wall.
That would be fun
the original Howard comic origin story is too ridiculous for filmgoer understanding
A better concept is: Howard come from a world of anthropomorphic ducks, were was kidnapp by Aliens who crash on Earth As Howard free himself and try to escape

I would pay to see that :D

THAT's Howard the duck?!

Speaking as someone who is somewhat fond of the movie (the first live action Marvel comics production ever), I'm not sure it could have widespread financial success, but I do think you could have it done as a critical success.

Have it be more of a pop culture critique of society or an art house style movie done in pastiche. The movie's source material is parody enough that you can play it relatively straight (strange as it is). I'm not sure that Lucas is the right director for that, but attempting to do such a movie seriously and playing up straight the surreality of it could make it a critical success, it makes a small amount of money (likely from folks goign to see what the guy who did Star Wars is making).

What, if anything the long term results are is probably making it a small and fondly remembered cult classic and an earlier attempt at doing serious comic book films that are not quite the 'dark and gritty' of Bronze Age style and not quite the 'corn' of those that took the direction of the Adam West Serials.

If it leads to Elf with a Gun getting a proper ongoing and spinoff in the 70's with Ditko doing art Doctor Strange style, I call it a success!

Oh, come on! Lucas had little to do with production of the Holiday Special.

So far the story goes Lucas had little to do with production of Howard the duck
but the movie let to end of allot career in Hollywood:

Frank Price quit his job as the head of Universal Pictures, the studio that funded the film.
Willard Huyck Director of this box-office Bomb, was that his last feature film...
Gloria Katz who produce the movie needed 8 year for second chance to produce a feature film "Radioland Murders", the Ultimate Boxoffice Bomb...

Jeffrey Jones and Lea Thompson career survived this, thank to cult classic like "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Back to Future Trilogy"

Alternaive Director
John Landis was originally slated to direct this film, but he dislike the Skript
Lucas take Huyck (script writher from "American Graffiti") despite Huyck last movie "Best Defense" was also box office bomb

Lucas had hoped that movie would bring $50 million profit for financing Skywalker Ranch complex
instead the Movie forces Lucas to pay one million to Universal Pictures to cover the production cost !
Now Lucas was forced to sell parts Skywalker Ranch complex and Division of Lucasfilm

one of Division was new CGI animation company buy by Steven Jobs, it's name PIXAR...

I think the best bet would be to have it be traditional animation for semi-mature audiences (rated PG-13 or R), somewhat akin to Heavy Metal.
