Go Wells Fargo and Leave the Driving to Us!

According to a pamphlet from the Wells Fargo History Museum, the stagecoach company was nationalised in 1918 as a war measure. WI that didn't happen? Could Wells Fargo have gone motorised and become the USA's premier motorcoach company? With the advantage of its long history, could it have prevented the rise of Greyhound? (I'm not saying Greyhound wouldn't exist, just that it would be a minor company like Jefferson Bus Lines in OTL.)

I don't see any way that it would not have been nationalized by the Wilson Administration. It was a reigning belief by Progressives (and continues as a major streak in Democrats right from FDR) that the government managed economy and transportation works best. The railroads were 'collectivized' and governed by state sanctioned boards in an effort to eliminate competition. I believe competition was seen as wasteful by the Hoover Administration as well.

The Progressives believed in nationalization, so you would have to butterfly out the Progressives I think. One shouldn't have to much further than the American railway system and how it was completely ruined by government regulation starting about 1900.

Actually, what was nationalized was Wells Fargo's railroad express freight operations. It was de-nationalized into the REA (Railroad Express Agency).

Without nationalization, I see Well Fargo Express morphing into a FedEx equivalent.
