I read an alt history story where the Australians after being told in 1936 that they were a long way down the queue for modern Monoplane fighters bought the Gloster design and hired Folland to develop it. They fitted it with a License built R1830 and 4 x .50 Brownings. It became the Empires Tropical fighter with India, New Zealand, Dutch East Indies and South Africa buying it or in Indias case a license to build it. By 1941 several squadrons were using it in North Africa and other squadrons were being formed in Asia.
I read it some time ago but it was an interesting take though excruciatingly badly written.
Not sure what performance would be but it surely would be equal to the F4 Wildcat/Martlet if not slightly better as it wouldnt be so heavily built nor have sea gear.
