Since I bought it up in another thread: what are the interesting fashion trends of your TLs? Where do they diverge from history, and what do they look like?
I’m always a sucker for bolo ties hitting it big. Besides that, more angrygonous clothing stemming from Classical PoDs is always super interesting to see.
This could be interested since fashion trends often reflect the art-style of the period, which says alot about the culture and dominating culturla influences.
i haven't come up with many, but here's what i do have. all of these only necessarily apply to my ASB ATL--i even have a whole section for the subject in the Word document i put my notes for it in, though it's not nearly as expansive as alot of other sections in the same file--and are therefore dependent on its events taking place, but i'll try to explain them.
fashion from after OTL's present-day (since the present-day of TTL is actually 2032) might be characterized as or by bastardizations of traditional cultural standards of beauty, such as the blackening of teeth and painting-on of eyebrows possibly making a comeback in Japan; this is still in early-development so i don't have alot regarding it
post-OTL fashions in the Mughal Empire are exemplified by double collars and sharply-contrasting, garish colors (i forget what inspired this, but it was probably a Bollywood music video)
the bashlyk--a cone-shaped hood usually made of felt, leather, or wool--stayed in use as standard Russian military headwear longer than IOTL as a consequence of the Soviet Union not coming to be ITTL, since the hoods were iconic of the White Army, but were mostly phased out in the 1940s and persist mainly as cold-weather gear; it also completely replaces the ushanka (the fur cap with ear flaps) as a stereotypical piece of Russian clothing
knickers made a comeback after OTL's present-day
quilt-pattern cotton clothing is popular in Anahuac, the revived Aztec Empire, (it's a long story) and they usually have oceanic motifs; this is inspired by cotton armor used by the Aztecs historically, which was soaked in brine to make it more effective
a modern hairstyle traditionalist/neopagan trend in Britannia (replacing Britain; it's a long story) is to shave ones entire body except for their head and upper lip, inspired by a Roman account of how the Brythonic Celts would wear their hair
half-shaved haircuts ITTL are a mid-20th century hairstyle which fell out of popularity at the start of the '80s but came back sometime after TTL's present-day (so it's not in wide use at time the present-day narrative takes place) as an extrapolation of Nazi fashions, of all things--it was a popular fad in the 1920s until the Nazis took a liking to it and killed the style until the late 2000s/early 2010s when Rihanna brought it back
based on a trend in Ancient Rome where rich women would wear their hair with huge, bonnet-shaped masses of curls at the front, his style makes a comeback in numerous Western countries after OTL's present-day, though maybe just in ones with a significant population of Italians as an extrapolation of it being a Roman hairstyle
The pocket belts under womens dresses in Victorian England either gets transferred over to the 20th century or tge concept of womens fashion needing pockets does.
A potentially boring one is the opinions on body hair, which seem to go through phases throughout history, and vary around the world at any given point (particularly for women). There really doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to it from my perspective, so you can justify just about any look that isn’t too idiosyncratic.
