Ghana Converts to Donatism

Missionary Berbers Convert the Ghana Empire to Donatism and they take everyone around them with them.

What happens?

Closer connections with North Africa (though only just-not a whole lot you can do with the Sahara in the way), and possibly earlier development of the Trans-Saharan trade routes, and potentially more gold in circulation. However, the Roman Empire, in whatever its incarnation, would not be happy with a "heretical" state, especially if it wields undo power and influence.

I think it'd be difficult since the Ghana Empire was only founded in 400 CE, and Donatism started declining in the 500's and disappeared in the 600-700 period; additionally you'd need a reason for them to convert.

In the Sahel states, it's only fairly recently that the majority of the population became Muslim. Even though the ruling classes of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai adopted Islam, most of the subjects remained pagan.

Well, hey, we could always play that favorite of POD cards, "Persecuted refugees from X set up a new home in Y, thus radically changing their culture," with "Donatists" as X, and Ghana as Y.
