Germany keeps its Monarchy after Versailles

Would a hereditary monarchy (but with Wilhelm II's abdication) have made things just a little more difficult for tyrants like Hitter from become a head of state?

In other words, could a path to democracy been a little more certain had a constitutional monarchy been maintained in Germany after WWI? After all many Germans saw the Wiemar Republic as a collection of corrupt puppets and thus damaged democracy's chances. Could something more stabilizing and familiar have made true democracy more likely?

Although Mussolini became dictator despite the monarchy, in the long run it help ensure continuity as Italy change sides and El Douche was assassinated.

I can see Germany becoming a constitutional monarchy like England. With the Reichstag leading the government and the Kaiser becoming a very popular figurehead or military commander.

I may be wrong but didn't the German people lose faith completely in their monarch after the war was lost?

I also read somewhere that Crown Prince Wilhelm III supported the Nazi's on their rise to power. There's something to think about.

But yes, a constitutional monarchist Germany would actually be kinda cool to look at.

On a completely random note I made Prussia into a republic in that new game, Empire:Total War.

Whilhelm supported Hitler because he viewed him as the conservative and better then the Social-Democrats or the Socialist groups like the KDP, and thought that he might use Hitler to restore the Monarchy. This was before the whole invading most of Europe ordeal of course.

The vague support of the exiled royal family for the Nazis was very much a result of hoping that Hitler would agree to restore the monarchy, which obviously wouldn't be an issue if the monarchy were still in power. Once it became clear in 1934 (Night of Long Knives) just how nasty the Nazis were and that the monarchy wasn't going to be restored Wilhelm III cut ties with them.

I think a handful of radical leftists ushered out the monarchs and ushered in the republic - or the soviets in some cases. I don't think the majority of Germans or Austrians lost faith in the monarchy or would have objected to its continuation. I do think that almost all were tired of the war and wanted peace and so just didn't care about the fate of the monarchy.

I think a continuation of the monarchy in Germany may have prevented Hitler in that it had stronger roots than the Weimar Republic. (Hey, if we can get rid of the old monarchial system why not get rid of the young republic?)

Of course, there is the example of Italy where a monarch appointed a dictator.

Personal Bias Disclaimer:
I am a huge fan of monarchies and think that the end of the monarchies after World War I was a great tragedy for Europe.

I was just going to mention Italy: Mussolini came to power with the tacit permission, possibly even approval of the King. "Better Black than Red" and all.

I could see a similar thing happening in Germany after the Spartacusbund uprisings.
