Germany drenched in Guilt Post-WW2

I can't say much more than what's been said really.

I mean this whole "Drenched in Guilt" is going on now as it was then. Heck when German exchange students come to our school they always have drawings of swastikas put in their pockets, and they always have sieg heil shouted after them.

It's appalling how the modern generation of Germans are treated. Heck anyone born after Nazi reign, in my opinion, don't really deserve to have the blame put on them.

To a lesser extent, being British, I will have the fact we were colonial and very unfair to our colonies thrown in my face by some American a lot on Xbox Live. I mean that annoys me, but the Germans have got it so bad.

It was one man and a stupid party and now Germany has to live with this guilt, it sickens me how humans are so stupid like that.

Yes the Holocaust was awful but everyone seems to forget other worse things, such as the Congo Massacre co-ordinated by the Belgium's. Every country has done something bad in its time, but history is only written by the victors, and so Germany is ashamedly forced to remember their past.

Sorry my rant is over now. Heck even I'm offended by this, I'm not even German and it's made me feel angry.

Go do something about your knowledge of Germany AFTER the 12 years of the 1000-year Reich.

Might I add that they do some reading and knowledge seeking on the German pre-1933 as well. Germany has too rich and grand history for it to be somehow tarnished or hidden due to 12 horrid years. It's my favorite subject area and always will be. Bravo!

Me too, Jotun.

This is an AH board. Maybe the original poster was from a different timeline.

It seems to me that modern Germany has wallowed in guilt for 50 years for the sins of the Hitler regime and has take far more responsibility for the evils of its past than any other modern nation - including every member of the allied coalition which defeated Hitler - not to mention Japan and the other European peoples which collaborated in the Holocaust.

The only observation I have (from knowing several Germans of different age groups) is that this contrition seems strongest in those of the generation born during the war and just after - and from former West Germans. My impression is that some younger Germans do tend to "excuse" the actions of WW2 Germany by seeking to compare them more recent events such as the Vietnam War, Iraq invasion, etc. There really IS a qualitative difference between what Hitler sought to acheive in 1939-45 and the actions of any other modern western state since the end of WW2.
