Germany buys back Eupen-Malmedy from Belgium in the 1920s

Belgium was willing to sell back Eupen-Malmedy to Germany in the 1920s, negotiations were already underway, but France interfered and prevented it from fulfilling. What if France did not interfere and Germany bought back Eupen-Malmedy? Would the Weimar Republic have gotten a popularity boost? Could it have survived?

Source for these negotiations? EM will not be enough for Weimar to survive. Would be interesting if Nazi Germany bought it in the early 30s, though, lots of potential butterflies.

It might be before the Great Depression, but Germany was facing hyper inflation before the Great Depression, thanks to the reparations they had to pay the allies from the Treaty of Versailles.

Germany was really willing to buy it, negotiations were already underway, so they must have had the necessary money for the purchase. Eupen-Malmedy is small, anyways, so it shouldn't be too expensive.

Personally I would think that Germany was far to broke to pay for the Eupen-Malmedy,.

I'm thinking that if negotiations got much further, that the UK and, especially, France, would say 'if you've the cash for that, you have a he cash for reparations. Stop whining and demanding reductions.'

This is obviously ASB but I like the idea of this libertarian replacement for Hitler being like “See guys? Why fight for our former glory when we can just BUY it?”

Germany suffered hyperinflation because the German government wanted to rid itself of internal debt and pension promises

The reparations had nothing to do with it. The Germans borrowed abroad to make the small reparations payments they made

Well they were still going through hyper inflation, I was never a economist.

The reason why Eupen-Malmedy was offered back to Germany was that Belgium did not want it. If shared very little with the rest of Belgium and it constantly agitated for reunion with Germany. The reason why the Belgian just did not just give it back is that they need money to rebuild the country for the first world war and most of the reparation payments went to France that’s why they got the lamp in the first place because they needed to gain something to pay back the devastation
