So what if Germany avoided all her mistakes she - or her leadership - made during and before the war?
IF: well, all mistakes is ASB... everyone make mistakes - but, it could be interesting if the germans avoid some mistaktes
- Production of PZ I halted in 1937, production of PZ II halted in 1938.
PZ III is equipped with a long 50 mm, Pz IV with a long 75 mm - mass production of thouse tanks begins in early 1939.
IF: nope - the germans needed time to build tanks - you could not start from nil... but, i agree, they could produce the Mark3 with the long 50mm-gun from the start, also they could stop the production of smaller tanks earliers (but not so much, the germans needed "filled" divisions... you cannot train your troops if you have 50 tanks per division if you need 400!)
Instead of building some 15 tank/antitank/spg models at the same time - the production is limited to 5 modles. The same type reduction goes for the Luftwaffe.
IF: nope, not so much... sure, with war is started they could reduce the numbers to some models... for tanks they used the production lines, cause retooling cost so many time (in witch you can produce so many tanks!, also they thought about a short war - with this you do not waste so much money for "nothing")
From 1942 onwards the Focke Wulf 190 is produced as the top German fighter instead of the BF 109.
IF: no smart idea, the FW lacked high altitude performance, so you basically strip the germans from high alt performance...
but i agree, they should have started the FW190D (with inline engine) much earlier, if they can start it in 1942 parallel to the radial engine concept, they could be finished in early 1943... so mass produced FW190D could be ready in mid/late 1943... this could have been a huge improvement (less losses, higher casulties for the allies...)
- More and faster research on Jet Fighters instead of rockets. Mass production of the Me 262 begins in mid 1943 as a jet fighter. No wasted time on making it a Blitzbomber.
IF: nope - to build the jets earlier you need a BIG shift in priorities, in jet engines... the frame is simple, but the engines are not... if you concentrate your energy in the engines you can move them 6 months... so the jets could be operating in early 1944 in numbers... but this will have a price (say, you stop the expensive A4-program, or all battleships (it is not the same, but in money and work-time, not in know-how, so even if you compensate it here, you cause a lack in knowhow for a4-program)
- More and faster research of tanks. Mass production of the Tiger tank begins in early 1942, mass production of Panther tank begins mid 1942.
IF: Tiger never were "mass produced"... they are simply to expensive...
but sure, the germans could force its "Durchbruchspanzer" a little bit, so in summer 1941 they could react a little bit faster, say tigers come in "numbers" in july/august 1942 and reach the front in combat numbers in october/november 1942...
the panther? nope, it was a new design, a reaction to the T34... you change this only with asb... maybe the germans have some strategy to replace the PnzIV... but this is not realistic.
Better is, that the germans start to build the F2 earlier and in numbers... again you could gain 3-6 months, but if you build the mark3 with the long 50mm, you will not have this development EARLIER... why? cause mark3L or N are so good that they will eat the t34 alive... in summer 1941... this means, the need for the mark4 f2 isn´t as big as in real life...
so if they force it in this scenario, they should come to the front in the same time as they came historically...
-More and faster research on U boats. The Schnorkel device is ready in early 1944.
IF: snorchel was ready in june 1940... they just ignored the concept. This is easy and they should use it... so from early 1941, each sub has a snorchel... that is something nobody could deny... a BIG mistake of the germans in real life...
- German economy switches to full war production from the start of the war. The prodcution reached in 1940 is the equivalent of OTL production in 1941, the production in 1941 is the equivalent of OTL production in 1942 ect.
IF: again, myths... the germans suffered from the heavy retooling in the time before WW2... they lack the money to do it earlier and better.
sure, it could be done 20-30% better and some months earlier, also if they decide to go the right way and do not change it 3 times (cost a lot time), they could move the production plan for 5-6 months, but you still lack nearly anything in 1940/41...
- Less racism. All eastern Europeans are treated like the Czechs. Not exactly good but far better than what happened in Poland and the USSR in OTL.
IF: okay, sure - this would be smart, but with no nazis (this is basically what you want) you have a sane government and with this you avoid war with russia... forever!. Complete different situation... but it is nearly asb...
they could do better, sure - but not so good as you want it...
- The British army is caputed at Dunkirk.
IF: that is the second easy thing - big german mistake - they could have sack the whole bunch, that break the neck of the british army... very low combat quality for a looooooooooooooong time... i doubt they could really recover from this
For sure the brits go panic about the invasion... so this will be an improvement for the germans
By the way: not doing the BOB would be a great improvement for the germans,
a.) they do not loose so many pilots and planes (important), so they can stop production for some planes much earlier (stockpile "old" bombers means you can use em longer) and switch to better bombers earlier...
say stop He111 and switch to Ju88 and Do217... so you have only 2 production lines, the Ju88 and the "heavy Do217"...
no loosing 2000+ pilots will be a big improvement, in the med the germans have much more firepower... loosing malta is nearly sure for the brits, also the convoys to and from italy to africa could be better protected by air
- Hitler does not declare war on the US. Roosevelt has a hard time explaining why all resources should go against Germany when it was Japan that attacked.
Even if Roosevelt declares war on Germany - it was still Japan that attacked and the US that declared the war.
IF: yes and no
yes - you are right, not declaring war would be good, but no, it doesen´t matter. Roosevelt wanted war with germany to support great britain unlimted... so he tried anything to come to war with germany...
in the atlantic war was ongoing, even without a declaration.
so the war will come - and the americans allways will concentrate for germany, cause roosevelt want this. you need a dead r. to change this
There were many more things the Germans could have done better - would be thankfull for additional comments.
