Germany and Britain

Not Churchill. Someone else as Prime minister, Halifax or any other. But asking this question about Winston Churchill is the same as asking "what if Winston Churchill was not Winston Churchill ?".

Churchill was not only a name. He was a man whose whole life was characterized by irrevocable commitments that made that he was finally chosen as Prime minister at the worst moment of the war because he was uncompromising. He really meant "we shall never surrender".

From what I have read, this seems true, but he is a politician.
If he sees the mood is for peace, he might accept it to prepare for round 2.
Otherwise, I think not having Churchill elected or dead is needed for the pod. Interesting that working German torpedoes takes care of removing Churchill and the increase success against the British at the same time.

The second sentence changes the whole context. In the first instance, it seems like Churchill is willing to go to any lengths to keep Britain safe, but in the second he say it can only be done if Britain is actually safe anyway.

Context is absolutely critical in these things.
No it doesn't. it shows Churchill as a human who's capable of having doubts. France... considered the worlds greatest military power was about to collapse, Germany had formed an alliance with two major powers, he had signed a non-Agression Pact with the Soviet Union and the US was in isolation. Things looked bad. The guys not Superman. It only makes sense that he'd have doubts about Britain carrying on.

That must be some other Churchill, who did not spend 6 years in the wilderness because he was convinced prevailing policy was wrong. The man was completely oblivious to public opinion and in fact always tried to steer it to his own liking. He would rather go down then accept something that did not conform to his world view.

Actually, the second sentence does change everything. It shows that Churchill knew better than to deal with Hitler and that Britain would need to be strong in order to do so. The first part was rhetoric and shouldn't be taken at face value. The second sentence shows actual policy.
