Germans press on after Dunkirk

Time constraints

I just reported Milch plan. I never said it would work. On the basic level, Milch calmed that if Britain was given three to four weeks it would no longer be possible to invade, because defensive preparations would be too strong. This means he assumed his plan would have to be implemented in a matter of days, and that alone is a near impossible task. But he thought of it as a gamble. If it fails, and France still falls, Germany gets its post BoB situation in August. The forces sent to Britain would be lost, but would have a big impact in Britain. A failed operation of this type would significantly alter the course of the war.

The political impact would have been massive - the French would have fought harder and longer and Reynaud might have been able to kick Petain to the kerb and then fight on from French North Africa (although there are an awful lots of ifs buts and maybes in that scenario). It might also have had an impact in curtailing the widening of the Axis in Eastern Europe - perhaps the Bulgarians or the Hungarians don't join, initially at least.

If they come in a rush then the German forces die...hard, Britain gets a major confidence boost, they came, we saw, they got their asses kicked. etc. Also the loses from a hurried invasion, along with the time the French are bought probably keeps the Herr busy, at least until late 1940, no BOB (or at least not in OTL form) as French still in the field, and the lines probably stabilise as Germany reaches the end of it (still fairly limited) war making ability.

Things might actualy stalemate for a while, maybe in a more fluid version of the WW1 western front and either Germany has to come back next year or the Allies spend the next few months rebuilding as quickly as possible.

With other problems Hitler can't attack Russia, both sides spend the next three or four years kicking the living you know what out of each other, until eventually American aid, and the allies greater resources begin to tell. (Also if France does keep at least some of the mainland then no Normandy to worry about).

Sooner or later the tide turns, Germany is forced into retreat and the generals stage a coup (remember it's only really after France that Hitler becomes the "Greatest military thinker of our time TM", the generals are still doing something of a "What are you nuts" in the early months of the war). War ends around 1943 in a negotiated peace.

All that's really ASB though, Germany was never getting through the Navy, and was never going to break the RAF before invasion become impossible, due to the oncoming winter (if it ever was). What really happened in 1940, with Germany in control of the continent, but with Britain still in the fight is the best they could have hoped for. Barring a serious bout of stupidity by the British, what followed was probably inevitable.
