Germanic Lombardy

As much fun as it is to parse the finer points of where kashubian national loyalty should lay, the discussion of language doesn't really solve the problem that unless you find a way of really altering the history of Lombardy, you're going to have Lombards speaking Italian.

My point is that the Elsassian say that they ain't german, kashubs says that they ain't polish. I'm polite enough to agree with 'em even if I think that they are full of ....

If I may assist...?
I think what Susano wanted to say was that today Alsaciens do not consider themselves as Germans but as Frenchmen or just as Alsaciens.
But Alsace was until the 17th century belonging to the HRE and a German-speaking area. From Louis XIV forward, Alsatians slowly turned French (mainly because of the revolutionary ideals of 1789). Until then, many of them spoke German and were considered as Germans.

On the Kashubs I don't know anything, so I just remain silent.

Which to some point was my point, the Kashubs has most likely identified as Poles before 1772. That's important are their identity now.

I do agree one of the problem was that Lombard identity was mostly cultural and legal and not linguistic, that is needed is to make their language more cultural important. Maybe by making it into something like slavonic the language of the church. Of course that would mean that the Lombards would go othodocs, while not a big jump religous, it would be hard with rome in the middle of their territorium.
