Chapter I: A Pyrrhic Victory and a Defense
Late October - Early November 1942
Rommel, while still inflicting great losses, pulls out of El Alamein so more German equipment will not be destroyed. He orders half of his men ro defend Suez, while the other half will perform a direct assault on Allied lines. Or at least this was the plan. In reality, a quarter of Rommel's troops would loop around and flank advancing Allied forces.
On November 2, after a whole day of rest, the attack is launched. German forces would block the road with mines and machine guns, stalling the Allied advance. However, a contingent of Allied troops tries to exit and go around the block, but is pinned down by a surprise attack by the aforementioned flankers. With the Allied force even smaller, the German flankers would launch their main attack at Noon.
The flankers were able to push the Allied troops to the coast across Northwestern Egypt by 4:00. That day, the Battle of Matruh ended up in a decisive Axis victory and prevented the Allies from advancing into Egypt for the rest of the war.
