Okay so after an initial success at Stalluponen, General Prittwitz was persuaded by General Francois that a more aggressive approach could work against the numerically superior Russians. However at Gumbinnen these plans suffered a severe setback when the German attack faltered and was thrown back. This however had positive results for the Germans as von Moltke then replaced Prittwits and Francois with Hindenberg and Ludendorff. However it also resulted in the transfer of several divisions from the west. Many historians agree that these divisions had a major effect on the right wing of the German advance into France resulting in defeat at the Battle of the Marne.
