German Unification... in Late Antiquity

Folks on this forum often like to discuss opportunities for early German unification, and I figured that you could not get much earlier than this, so... :p

With any point of divergence no more than a few decades after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (and none before 476, either), would it have been possible for one empire to have united most or all of the major Germanic barbarian kingdoms, such as those of the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, Burgundians, Vandals, Alammani, and Thuringi, into one empire that lasts for at least a century or so? I know that Theoderic came relatively close, given that he was simultaneously king of the Ostrogoths and Visigoths and exerted some influence over neighboring kingdoms, but was there a better opportunity to create a pan-Germanic empire during this era?
