Okay so a while ago, I was browsing some alternate history threads when I came across one where Germany keeps Silesia and Pomerania after WW2. In the timeline, the USSR annexes all of Königsberg. This had me wondering about what if Stalin decided to make Konigsberg a German SSR? Say Germany still loses all the territories it lost after WW2. Konigsberg is still split, but remains mostly ethnically German, with small Russian and other ethnicities immigrating to it. Would this even be possible, and what would happen after the collapse of the USSR?

I doubt Stalin would do this, but I can see him doing this for one reason: if Koinigsberg surrendered or even declared itself in an active state of revolt. Stalin would be a bit more compassionate (I know, the idea is foreign), and could act as a propaganda piece ("Surrender and you will not be harmed!"). After the war, the Prussian SSR would most likely join Germany or become independent.

OK, this is a really interesting idea. I kind of like the idea of the German SSR being...at least ostensibly...a micro-scale Communist Weimar Republic. Obviously, the German SSR would probably be more or less like any other SSR, but it might share the westerly orientation that, say, the Baltic SSRs had, and I could see a lot of propaganda work going to try and portray the German SSR as being some kind of free socialist democracy, unlike the post WW2....actual Germany.

I mean, is it plausible? Probably not too plausible, but it could be an interesting twist on things.

Obviously not you undergradaute swine. It's knot my job to educate you. Don't any of you know how impossible it would be to make a German SSR? The

The USSR already had a German republic, it was called the Volga German ASSR. Ethnic Germans and German speakers had been a disproportionate part of the nobility, the political class, and the economic elite before the revolution, so revolutionaries depicted themselves as "true" Russians fighting against a foreign elite that was exploiting them.

The Volga Germans were less wealthy and elite before 1914, but still saw themselves as Russian citizens. Their identity was analogous to French-speakers in Canada today. After Barbarossa their ASSR was abolished, and they were all deported to Kazakhstan and Russified. Most who could still prove their ancestry went "home" to reunified Germany in the 1990s. Their republic might have been raised to full SSR status without WW2 if Moscow wanted to make nice with Berlin, but this probably isn't the German population in question.

The chance of an ethnic SSR in territories that were German pre-1914 is basically zero. The allied powers and the local populations on the ground all saw ethnic German minorities as hostile fifth columns after the atrocities of the war and the geopolitical weaponization of the minorities by the Nazis. Any territory annexed to the Soviet Union was going to be settled by Russians, or at least east Slavs.

But you used knot wrong and you're telling someone else they're uneducated.

A lot of implausible history happens, Trump is President. That's like something from an episode of sliders. I remember seeing the newpaper after the inauguration and thinking it looked like a prop from the show. One of the world's they're just in for a few seconds.

Q-ball, I think it's safe to say this isn't our Earth, look at this.

Yup, opens vortex.

So yes we could have a Prussian SSR they'd probably call it that not the German SSR.

Spin propaganda around about how the Germans are Huns they're the innocent Prussian people and even resurrect the old tonge written in cyrillic. It's just implausible that would have happened, but not impossible.

Actually, there weren't all that many ethnic Germans left after the war. The situation is different from Silesia, Pomerania and the Sudetenland: While the latter three were ethnically cleansed from the German population as a whole after the surrender, East Prussia had largely been evacuated in the winter of '44-45 when Soviet conquest was imminent. It was pretty horrible; people starved to death and died from breaking into the frozen-over Baltic Sea and the worst single-ship disaster in terms of loss of life in human history is actually not the Titanic or the Lusitania, but a massively overcrowded East Prussian refugee boat which got torpedoed by the Soviets. The Soviet sub commander got to keep a clean conscience - people had actually been desperate enough to try and flee on a freaking troop transport... Anyways, East Prussia is why we're calling it "flight and expulsion" as opposed to simply expulsion.

While IIUC Germans were still a narrow majority in former East Prussia when the war ended, there weren't really enough people left to rebuild the place and it would probably have lost its majority-German character even if Stalin had decided against ethnic cleansing and resettlement by Slavs.
