German People's Republic vs Soviet Union

Spartacist Rebellion succeeds and Germany becomes communist, and the Bolsheviks defeats the Whites like in OTL. What if they were both communist at around the same time, but.... fought? While the idea of a German-Russian alliance is one of my very favourite alternate history subjects, would an alliance between Communist Germany and USSR have really come about immediately just because they're both communist? What if an ideological split of some sort occurred and they came into conflict as a result of that?

Pick a POD that would fit best for this to occur. Who would win? Even if you have an idea of who would win, how could the other opponent win? What would be the aftermath?

Germany would lose simply because it has unfriendly neighbour surrounding it, fascist italy, anti communist France and Britain, I think they would rather have the distant communist power win than the one at their door.

I dunno, better the devil you know and all that, and the Soviets outright finlandizing Germany isn't really much of an improvement.

Also it depends on circumstances. How does the war start, who if anyone gets involved?

A successfully Spartacist rebellion means no treaty of Versailles and the accompanying arms reduction. Poland would not exist as it would be crushed between the Germans in the West and the Soviets in the East

The Bolsheviks were, generally in this period, of the opinion that a revolutionary movement in Germany was vital to their continued survival. The socialist movement in Germany at the time was the largest in the world with one of the most organised working class movements as well. I think it very likely that initially the Soviets would be subordinate to the Germans but as the Russian economy recovered and developed the balance of power might shift.

It's possible that there could be a split, although I doubt it would be catastrophic or deep. I'm doubtful that any split would lead to war. At most sort of border skirmishes similar to the Sino-Soviet split, perhaps conflict over how best to organise the likes of Poland or Comintern. At the end of next day, they would be two pariahs with shared history, interlinked economy, and surrounded by hostile states. If they went to war, they'd be doing their enemies' work for them.
