How can we get an occupation of Japan that more closely resembles the occupation of Germany after WWII?
It's often been noted that the Japanese have not confronted their wartime history to nearly the same degree as Germany, and certainly the Japanese as a whole don't appear to be aware of the violence done by Japanese forces against civilians, prisoners, etc.
What does it take to change the occupation of Japan then, such that confrontation of the war and its atrocities occurs and makes a deep cultural impression?
What would such an occupation look like, and what would happen to Japanese culture and society?
