To overcome the shortages in horses and mechanised transport could light long distance railways be laid to bring supplies to the fronts from a national distance?
Germany was short of horses and mechanisation. Main railways could only carry so much and to a limited number of rail heads.
Roads were poor especially in bad weather but we have seen how quickly light railways could be built close to the front, especially in the West.
Could Germany have designed and stockpiled light railway track and rolling stock to overcome this deficiency?
Whilst I am thinking more of WW1 the logistics bottle neck in WW2 n the East was the few mainline routes which were inadequate to meet the demand.
Light railways can also be removed fast and redeployed as circumstances change; given notice and time.
If light steam power is used then it does not impact upon limited oil supplies.
Air attack and shelling can only damage a few sections of track units which are easily and swiftly replaceable and can be moved from a store by horse ad humans when necessary without heavy lifting equipment.
