I've read that German almost became the official language of the United States at the time of the Constitution. Would that have changed our attitude (and the Germans') during WW1 & WW2?
Wow, I grew up believing that the "lost by one vote" story was true. I did note in the article that the House passed a law stating that federal statutes shall be published in English only. I wonder if the Senate passed that as well.
Well what if USA would have printed laws in two languages from early on. Think it would change a lot in their attitude, yes. People would be able to respond that Germans were one of the oldest americans and it would be considered common knowledge.
