Gerald Ford dies between confirmation as VP and Nixon resigning

Depends on how crazy Nixon is. He could try to prevent action against himself by nominating an unacceptable VP, say Reagan. Who wouls NOT confirmed.

My guess is that if that happened Congress would pass, if need be over Nixon's veto a new succession act.

At that point, what's the standing presidential succession order - 25th amendment or other pertinent Act? Speaker of the House is next at bat? - and that would have been Carl Albert

When does Ford die exactly? If it's a month after he assumes the Vice Presidency, then Nixon will try to appoint someone. If he tries to impede the process in anyway and stick it out, then he'll get impeached and convicted and be removed from office. If there's no Vice President, then Speaker Carl Albert would assume the Presidency. Albert stated at the time that if he became President by succession that it would be in the national interest to resign immediately after the House and Senate had confirmed a Republican Vice President.

I have a theory that Nixon might work on the theory that it would be hard to remove him and replace him with the Dem House Speaker, hence he offers a VP the Dems could not confirm

Nixon attempts to appoint someone like Ronald Reagan to stall for time; he gets removed from office, Carl Albert appoints a GOP VP and then resigns.

Yep, it's an easy fix and absolutely no one in the Republican or Democratic parties will begrudge Albert being Pres for a bit and then leaving to put a GOPer in given the context.

Looking back, given Watergate, the Pardon, and malaise of the 1970, it's an utter miracle Ford did as well as he did in 1976z
