George Washington Dies In Spring 1779

So I recently read that in Spring 1779 when General George Washington was still camped with the Army in New Jersey, that he developed a severe case of quinsy and that he feared for his life. He even went as far as to appoint General Nathanael Greene as his successor should he die. Now what if Washington does indeed die, what comes of the war effort and can we see Greene take the place of Washington OTL?

Greene certainly was a capable and smart officer, and his counterparts in the British army knew that.

What I foresee happening is that there is going to be butterflies flapping in the South. If Greene is in overall command, he can’t command in the South at the same time.

Assuming that the North stays static, and Clinton is in overall command, I think a Greene can win the war.

Lots of people forget that Greene was one of the senior generals in the Continental Army, and in my opinion is the most underrated commanders in American history.

Yes I agree, he was Washington’s most trusted General for a reason and while Washington was in charge he advised him against moves that could’ve doomed the Army. Do you think he will still win the war at Yorktown or how do you think it would end, because he would obviously have to appoint someone else to command in the South after Lincoln is captured at Charleston.

Sorry for the late reply on my end, but I think that it depends on what the butterflies are. In my personal view, it depends on if Charleston goes the same as OTL. In Terry Golway's excellent biography of Greene Washington's General: Nathanael Greene and the Triumph of the American Revolution, the author notes that Greene fought with Congress and in OTL he was not the first choice to command the Southern Army after Charleston. My guess for an alternate commander in that case would be a senior general, or maybe Arnold if he doesn't switch sides because of the butterflies.
