What if George W. Bush resigned during his second term? Obviously Cheney assumes the presidency, but could the POD be the economy tanking faster or the war going worse? What would be the impact on his legacy as a president?

Honestly I think the only thing that could make Bush resign are health problems of some sort. I doubt he'd resign just because the Great Recession began earlier or Iraq got worst.

Also,I feel as if Cheney might resign too and if not,he wouldn't seek his own term in office(hell, depending on when Bush resigns,Cheney might not even survive his short Presidency).

The effects could include potentially hurting the Neoconservative Movement in the Republican Party heavily, maybe taking it a bit more towards the center so McCain and Romney wouldn't have to change so much?
That or they could become more Libertarian, ala Ron Paul and Gary Johnson while also being Anti-Bush.

If Bush resigns for some reason because of the Great Recession being earlier or Iraq,I feel he would be remembered largely as a quitter or a coward by many, mainly Liberals while some Republicans would view him like that,I have a feeling a good amount of Conservatives like Frist would try and paint him as being 'forced out' by the Democratic Party.

The Great Recession was an after effect of the 08 crisis in the banking, housing and automotive sector. In 2008 it was an economic crisis and panic not a recession Bush was dealing with an he wouldn't resign while he is trying to save the American economy from total collapse just because it was very difficult and taxing.

It's ASB given his personality short of him having a massive stroke or heart attack or something akin to that.

I remember at one time thinking, a more Asian view of responsibility and a chief executive might resign over Abu Ghraid in 2004 or '05.

Or, announce that he's going to do everything he can do to improve the occupation and resign in three months.

Maybe a foreign policy screw up (such as an ambassador being killed) or second domestic terror attack akin to September 11th? Would that be pressuring enough?

Bush's rocky relationship with Cheney, and his personality as we know it, make this highly unlikely. He wouldn't see resignation as the honorable way to admit the kind of failure that would pre-empt this, like for example, a nuclear Iran, he'd see it as betraying the people who supported him.

In all honesty, resigning would probably make any economic situation worse. The stock market has a tendency to overreact to bad events and a US President resigning would just add ripples to whatever else was happening. The only way that Bush resigns is if he was caught redhanded doing something unambiguously illegal (a la Nixon) or if there was an earlier POD that set a precedent for Presidents resigning when they screw up or being forced out in a coup

I don't see President GW Bush resigning for anything short of "caught in bed with a live boy or a dead girl" or a mentally impairing health problem. I don't think he'd resign for a heart attack, but would for a stroke.
