George W. Bush killed in a car crash 1974

On September 4th 1976 (sorry for the mistake in the title), George W. Bush was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. Lets say, that in this inebriated state he manages to get into a fatal car accident.

Will politics be changed much before 2000?

Who will the Republicans nominate in 2000?

Could they still win or will Al Gore bring home a victory?

Well, this changes two things in pre-2000 politics.

1) The death of his son might affect the Senior Bush mentally and emotionally.

2) Someone else will become Texas State Governor.

1) An interesting point. What kind of effect would occur? How might it affect his political career?

2) I think Ann Richards would probably win the Governorship in 1994 and then lose to the Republican candidate next time.

GHW Bush had another son, and is already head of the CIA in 1976. There is a strong chance that his career does not change, so we can assume the elections (outside of Texas) through 1999 proceed much as in OTL.

In 2000, the Republican front runner might be John McCain, followed by Pat Buchanan and others. A McCain-Gore race in 2000 might be the same toss-up as it was with Bush-Gore. The differences between McCain and Gore administrations would follow predictable paths, but there would be two commonalities: First, neither would have invaded Iraq as in OTL. Second, there is the long shot that different staffers in intelligence positions could have stopped the 9/11 attacks, but I must emphasize this is a long shot.

I could definitely see Barbara Bush heavily supporting MADD due to her eldest son's death. Expect said organization to get a lot more press due to her involvement, perhaps even some from Bush Snr...

With his support of MADD making him a tad more socially conservative, perhaps Bush Snr. feels less of a need to pick Dan Quayle for VP in 1988. Perhaps he goes with someone else, Jack Kemp (a favorite of mine...) would be a similiar pick and an interesting one if he ever ascends to the presidency.

Another thing to consider might be the affect W's death has on younger brother Jeb. With Bush out of the picture perhaps Jeb feels more pressure to follow daddy's example and get into politics earlier...

Even MORE Importantly, If something Like The Cole Attack Still Occurs ...

Either of them May have Followed President Clinton's Lead, And Cracked Down on Al Qaeda, Both at Home and Abroad!

Such Inquiries May have Ultimately Led them to 3 Middle-Eastern Men at a Miami Flight School, Who Never Quite Seemed to Care to Learn either Take-Offs or Landings ...

The fact that three people make the same type of flight school request is indeed suspicious. But a single individual can make a very logical excuse: he is an author or playwright and wants to describe the experiences of a character who can not fly and unexpectedly finds himself in the cockpit of an airborne plane.
