I've been thinking about this issue since the Goldwater timeline made Romney a real contender for the Republican nomination. I hope I don't sound like a certain breed of contemptible conspiracy theorist, but as I recall George Romney was born in Mexico outside of American territory entirely. As such, whether or not he was a "natural born citizen" was at least somewhat questionable, depending on whether or not being born to American parents made one eligible for the Presidency. I know Romney getting near the Republican nomination is not likely, but bear with me. Let's say absolutely everything goes right for Romney in the primaries, through some enormous amount of luck, he's the Republican's Presidential nominee-would his eligibility be challenged? And if so, how would the courts decide in 1968? Would the courts rule that natural born included individuals born to American parents, or would Romney be kicked off the ballot? I'm sorry if I am seriously misunderstanding constitutional law on this point, and if Romney's Mexican birth would truly be no impediment I apologize for wasting peoples time here. I also realize the implausibility of a Romney nomination, but again bear with me on that.
