George Lucas Killed in Episode I Pre-Production

Lets say that in the Mid-1990's, it was clear that George Lucas was going to make a prequel trilogy. He had the money and was in the process of writing it.

Lets say in 1995-1997, before anything major happens George Lucas all of a sudden passes away, what would happen to Star Wars?

What do you think would happen to Star Wars?

I think that it would still happen, but a different director would be chosen. It would be a big shock to the world that George Lucas died, since he is the creator of the worlds arguably best known movie series.

My main idea is that Stephen Spielberg takes over making Star Wars, what would a Spielberg Prequel Trilogy be like?

I don't know about Spielberg, but I heard the guy who directed The Empire Stikes Back could have directed the Prequal trilogy. Maybe he ends up making the triolgy as a tribute to Lucas?

Would the Quality be better, I see Jar Jar being non-existant.

Here is how my dad pictured the Prequels as a child...

The Clone Wars would be waves of Jedi fighting against waves of Sith Clones, not droids and crap like that.

Spielberg would likely become producer, but the directing and screenplay would probably be given down some of the ROTJ and TESB production crew if they're willing. Of course, there are so many variables it's hard to say. Lucas already had the basic story down by then, so I'd guess the films would be vaguely recognizable either way. The quality is up in the air, depending on who's chosen.

The prequels are still made, but the directing is much better, having been handed to Irvin Kershner. The general storyline is similar, but the details are a lot different and the films are made much darker and less child-friendly, much in keeping with the aesthetic feel of the original movies.

Ok, so is Episode 1 the first movie, the fourth movie, the first of the new three movies, the…?

I mention Star Wars and my nephews say: “You mean Episode IV”

Actually, the original trilogy seemed much less dark to me than the more recent prequels. Mind you, I saw the very first SW movie at the age of twelve, the year it came out. I also know that it was considered quite child-friendly at the time. I actually found the prequel trilogy off-putting, but then again, I'm just not into terribly dark movies to begin with. I did find the mixture of darkness and juvenile appeal in the prequels to be a strange combination.

When the Episode IV: A New Hope was released, it was made known at the time (well-known enough that my 12 year-old self was aware of it) that Lucas actually had written at least the storylines of three SW trilogies, with the trilogy that began with this first movie actually being the middle of the story, chronologically speaking. I remember wondering for years after Return of the Jedi came out whether any of the other six would ever make it to film. Unfortunately, when that question was finally answered and I went to see Episode I, it was actually disappointing and I immediately suspected that Lucas had watered down or otherwise altered his original work to suit a different audience (and JarJar seemed so cartoonish as to be a completely new addition aimed at the kiddie set).

There's a part of me that will always want to read the prequels as originally conceived back in the 1970's... and will also always wonder what is in the other three installments that were mentioned back then but haven't seen the light of day.

The original trilogy was Episode IV: A New Hope (generally just referred to as Star Wars, which was of course its original title; the episode number was added later to clarify its position in the saga), followed by The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) and Return of the Jedi (Episode VI). The three newer movies are Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Make sense now? ;)

Someone on AH.com would have made a thread entitled "George Lucas not killed in Episode I Pre-Production" and we would have discussed if he would have made the film better than his replacement.
