Most likely like father, like son. Howard Hughes, Donald Trump and WR Hearst were very far from self-made men. It is to their credit they made the vast majority of their huge fortunes themselves but they all started from a plateau of riches most of us will never see to begin with.

yea that's basicly the point, I was just wondering what would be the consequence

Citizen Kane might be different or not exist at all :D

Pulitzer win the Yellow paper war by default

Maybe he can get himself killed off whilst in Deadwood

While Deadwood is fictional it could raise the possibility of him dying while building is corporate empire. Maybe that might led to William taking an earlier interest in buisness and go into mines rather than newspaper

Actually the TV series is semi-fictional. Many of the characters in the show were real life people in their roles as depicted in the show. And Hearst did pass through Deadwood whilst making his fortune ;)

If he’s the guy I'm thinking of I think most of his wealth came from what seemed like a super-natural ability to find very rich ore deposits and get them developed. Especially in pretty isolated areas of the American west. So if he doesn't find them, say because of an early death, and some of his finds are delayed you might see an economic impact across the world. Both the US and the wider world will have less money and at the time when most currencies are backed by spicies [sp?] this could mean reduced and slower development. [I think I remember reading that the long, almost continuous boom of the Victorian period was at least partly dependent on the continuous expansion of gold due to new finds.

Geez  thought I'm not sure about the supernatural part, the whole Western civilisiation trip on the ground cause he ain't rich sure his worrying

Well the Spanish-American war might still happen (if it's not butterfly away)

Maybe Pulitzer might still be associate with Yellow Newspaper rather than the prize as Hearst ain't going to give him competition

and I knew about Deadwood

Was the elder Hearst that rich? My understanding was he had about what Trump and Hughes started with, today's equivalent of about 10 mill. That aint chump change but it's not the vast fortune that WR Hearst built up by any means.

One of the main consequences of no Hughes could be legal marijuana. Marijuana was legal until 1930's, when a process for making paper from hemp was invented and threatened Hughes' wood pulp papermaking empire. Reefer Madness ensued. Someone of a more libertarian stripe might have hit upon the idea of buying up the hemp instead and the nation's newspapers would have annual editorials promoting the healthful benefits of the after-dinner spiff as equivalent to daily exercise and fruit in the diet. :D
