George H.W. Bush Runs for 2nd Term, non-Consecutive

George HW Bush, is, as we all know, eligible for a 2nd term as he only has served one. Does anyone think it would have been possible for him to have run for president in either 1996, 2000, 2004, or even 2008? What would need to happen?

There was some discussion of him running in 1996, IIRC. He might have some small chance of winning, but I doubt that he could win. Anything after '96 is unlikely, as he would be getting on in years, and he would probably be considered something of a political relic.

Is it more probable that he could have pulled the nomination out of the bag in 1980 and won, lost in 1984, and then run again c. 1988 or 1992?

Depends on whether or not Reagan is there. If he is, then I cant see Bush pulling off the nomination without a fair bit of luck. If he doesnt, then the nomination is possible, although a more open primary season may mean competition from Baker, Dole, Crane, or some other challenger.

Bush Sr.(and the RNC for that matter) wouldn't dare risk having a rematch with "Slick Willie" in 96 and by 2000 Bush would be 76 and and too old to run anyway, and besides, he wouldn't want to hold back his son Governor G.W.
