George Custer as president

wasn't his main claim to fame that he was a crappy military guy who lost in spectacular fashion to indians (which we considered to be savages)? What brings him to the forefront of American folklore other than that defeat?

He was actually a competent cavalry general during the Civil War. Maybe Grant notices him and makes him part of his inner circle. He eventually serves as Secretary of War under Grant and has some sort of political career, but I dubt he'll manage to be elected President.

I feel like his habit of publicly declaring that the US should actually abide by the surrender terms they forced on the Native Americans may put a damper on his popularity, particularly in the West and among the corrupt BIA bureaucrats.

From my understanding, Fidgeted's name was being floated that year as a possible Democratic candidate for President; one of the reasons he wanted to get the battle over as quickly and successfully as possible. The Democrats would then have a war hero of their own to run; a hero whose popularity stemmed from the Indian Wars and not the Civil War, however.

At least that is the way I have always understood it.
