What are the chances that a geomagnetic storm similar to the one that hit the Earth in '89 could occur at the previous solar maximum, 1978? If you recall, that one knocked out Hydro Quebec, causing a massive NE power outage, and generated widespread and very intense auroras (apparently, they were seen as far south as Texas). I figure something like that happening would have led to the various space agencies launching solar probes with greater intensity than they did IOTL until then. Most solar probes, so far as I can tell, have been launched since 1989, and the economic benefits from geomagnetic storm warnings have been a reason for funding them, the same way that NOAA's satellites are funded to help provide storm warnings.
