General Pope or McClellan

General Pope for all of his faults was fighting the post Peninsula Campaign with tremendous restrictions including little support from Mac. It has been said that Pope was set up for failure.

But what if General Pope is able to hold Lee to the Rapidan River until the rest of the Army of the Potomac arrives. Does President Lincoln keep a winning (at least for the Eastern Theater) general in command? Can we promote Mac to a training role, one he does so well?

If Pope wins he retains command until he stops winning or begins hesitating too much.

A good POD is Mac is slower than historically in getting the AofP back north. Could force Lee to maintain stronger forces around Richmond. Maybe only Jackson and Stuart head north against Pope. Offers opportunities for a northern victory.

Anyone who won, or even continued to hold ground was going to retain command.

Have Jackson killed at Cedar Mountain while trying to rally the troops - a failure to beat Banks at Cedar Mountain gives Pope more time to fight a simpler battle and a chance at blocking Lee.

I agree that as long as Pope does not lose he will retain command. It is just the awkward moment when Mac returns from the Pennisula and has no army. From the AofP perspective it is like showing up at the bar and your old girlfriend has a new guy, who also has the sports car.
