General Edgar Allen Poe

What if Edgar A. Poe stayed at West Point and became a Army Officer what would his career be like? What side would he take in the American Civil War?

Fascinating, I had no idea he was at West Point at any time. While I'm not too big of a fan of his writing (not because I don't like it, but because I haven't read much of it), experiences on the battlefield could potentially give him some inspiration for some sort of war horror stories? If not a big military POD (I don't really know how good of a general he would make, but I doubt it would help the CSA much in the long run.), it could be an interesting literary one.

I'm not that into Poe, but I do know that Lovecraft was really inspired by his style of writing, and I bet that the horrorgenre of literature would loose one of it's big ones. Any other thoughts?

Horrors of Horrors,

No [Lady & the Tiger] (1 of my favorite stories) No Vincent Price in [The Raven]

Nevermore, I say, Nevermore.

How did they turn "The Raven" into a movie? The poem is too short and doesn't really have a plot.

Would Poe get very high in rank? He didn't really like military life much (though he did become a Sergeant before attending West Point, I believe) and did everything in his power to get kicked out, including showing up for parade wearing only his boots.

Hmmm, maybe Poe becomes a Southern version of Ambrose Bierce (who served in the 9th Indiana during the CW) since they were so bitter macabre figures ?
