Gen. Maurice Rose Lives

Maurice Rose was an American armoured divisional commander during World War II and widely regarded as one of the most talented (in addition to being one of the most highly ranked Jews in the US Army). What if he had not been killed near the end of the war and continued in his military career? Would he have played a significant role during the Korean War (assuming butterflies don't interefere) or would he have sought a role in politics?

I think that if General Rose survived the war Eisenhower would have put him in command of Nuremberg Prison and running security for the trials. This would have been fitting since Rose was the senior Jewish Officer in the ETO.
Without a doubt the Jewish leaders in Palestine would have tried to recruit him to lead the soon to be born IDF. I think Rose would be too senior for the Army to let him go. Perhaps Truman sends him to Israel after the 1948 war to appraise Isreal’s Military capability. Maybe there is an ambassadorship later on.

Well sometime between 1945 and 1948 Rose can retire, and then go where he pleases if he chooses to go to Israel. Depending on where he comes from or sets up he may have a shot at Congress - representative or senator. In the late 1940s/early 1950s going any higher than this is impossible for aJew, and even this would only be possible in a very few places, no matter what his war record.

Would it be harder for a Jew than a Catholic in that era?

My hunch is him probably just retiring quietly or living out his army career in some supporting role. He seems (at least from the surface) like the kind of "dasher" that wouldn't fare too well in a peacetime, drawn-down army.

@Wendell: Yah, much harder for a Jew than a Catholiic. Note that, while losing and the victim of some nasty prejudice, Al Smith was nominated for president in 1928, and had been Governor of New York. In 1960, in spite of similar nastiness, JFK was elected. In 2018 exactly one Jew jas been involved in a presidential race, and Joe Lieberman got nowhere fast in the primaries. Overt, shameless social antisemitism was diminished not one whit by WWII and the Holocaust - the worst public aspects were toned down but restricted housing, and even whole towns, quotas or absolute exclusion in schools and universities were up front. Many other examples, just to make a point.

Bernie Sanders is Jewish.
