Geek culture more aggressive in the 80s and pushes harder for acceptance!

What would it take for the makers and players of DnD as well as fantasy novel readers to be more aggressive in the fight for their hobby and genre to be accepted?

A space opera TV show with a video game, comic book series, action figures, table top RPG, and video games about a spaceship lead by an all American military commander bringing freedom, democracy, and free love to the galaxy becomes a pop culture sensation in the 80s!

The video game is an accessible RPG that is a plot to get the mainstream into RPGs.

Results would be worse than OTL for all, since it'd be watered down. OTL is a cultural dystopia in large part because of 2000s-on "geek chic".
