Gathering more data for a Khazar TL.

Hello all; SplendidTuesday here and I've decided to do a TL on Khazaria.

I have a good deal of information about the Khazars themselves from my previous request thread, but I don't have too much information on the rest of Europe.

My PoD is around the late 950s to early 960s, and it by itself isn't very important, but it's effects are.

So what was happening in this era? Specifically, what where the Byzantines, Rus, Papacy, Iberians (both Christian and Muslim), Pechenegs, and Volga Bulgars doing?

From what I can remember both the Caliphate of Cordoba and the Byzantine Empire were reaching the height of their power.

Interestingly enough, I was planning for the PoD for my Khazar TL to be that a Jewish moneylender in Cordoba charges a little too much, gets killed, and his death sparks a huge exodus of Jews to Khazaria, after Hasdai, the Jewish vizer to the Caliph, tells about the power and tolerance of the Khazars, as well as the fact that they are Jewish. (After his correspondence with Khazar Khagan Joseph I, of course).

Now I'm not quite sure, as it seems the Caliphate was much more tolerant then I expected. Perhaps there can be a similar problem with the Byzantines? Or would there have to be a different (but still very small) PoD for Khazaria?

Well, Byzantium, while more tolerant than the rest of Europe, only just barely put up with the Jews. There were several rounds of persecutions, frex one under Heraclius. Unfortunately, I don't have any specific sources on the subject at the moment.

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews_of_the_Byzantine_Empire
Wikipedia ironically has been the best, or at least most coherent source at the moment.
