Gary Locke For Veep: An Asian-American Vice President

Back in 2004, many people considered Gary Locke, a Chinese-American governor of the state of Washington, to a leading candidate in 2008 for the vice presidency or even the presidency. But after he had given the Democrats' response to Bush's 2004 State of the Union address, some hate mail got to him and he decided against going further into the public eye, choosing not to run for reelection in 2004. What if Locke had not gotten any hate mail and decided to pursue his political career further? How far could he have gotten?

Well, he's my new "boss" as our new Sec of Commerce and seems a good guy so far. Good speaker that portrays himself as an "everyman" and a family man with a "buck stops here" mentality, so he could get some public support. Of course he was choice #3 or 4, so whether that's indicative of "face loss" from the 04 response or just indicative of his "rank" in the party I don't know.

I could see him for Veep slot or even doing OK in the primaries, though with "heavy hitters" like Hillary and Obama I doubt he gets the nom. Unless he draws votes from one or the other of them in a crucial primary then his effect is minimal. Maybe getting the Veep nom he saves Obama some of the controversies caused by some of Biden's "statements".

Problem is that Gary Locke is not known outside of the State of Washington so it's really hard to say how far he would have gone. He was formerly King County Executive and a two-term governor of Washington State.

Perhaps as Secretary of Commerce he will develop name recognition outside of the Seattle metro area.
